The Battered Women's Project is dedicated to the empowerment of battered women and their children and therefore committed to the elimination of interpersonal and societal violence. The Battered Women's Project believes violence is intimate relationships is supported and encouraged by our culture. The use of force or threat to achieve and maintain control is manifested in sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, anti-semitism, able-bodyism, ageism, and other oppresssions. The abuses of power in our society fosters domestic abuse by perpetuating conditions that condone violence against women and children.
The Breakwater Teen Shelter provides a safe place for youth between the ages of 10 to 17 to stay. The shelter is located at 218 Main St., with a bed capacity for eight boys and eight girls. The shelter is licensed by The Department of Human Services, as a low-barrier youth shelter. The low barrier status means that barriers are lowered for youth to access the program and the shelter is not a 24-hour shelter. The shelter is open seven days a week from 8pm to 8 am.
The Good Samaritan Haven is an overnight emergency homeless shelter serving singles and families, and is the only homeless shelter in the area. Half of all guests are from Washington County, a quarter come from other areas of Vermont and the remainder are from the rest of the country. Whether passing through or looking to settle again soon, all are welcomed and there is no charge for any services.
In 2009, we served over 4,500 meals, provided support services, hope and opportunity to over 325 people and assisted more than 75 people in obtaining or remaining in affordable housing. It's easy to be a "Good Samaritan" in Central Vermont.
